Looking for ideas on controlling a remote stepper motor

So I want to vent my printer outside but I would rather not have the vent leaking cold air in with the printer is not running. I have made a stepper controlled blast gate that will do this for me. I can have the printer open and close the gate as part of printing or maybe just when the printers vent fan kicks in. The issue is controlling it as it is to far to easily control it with a pico via USB. So my options are:

  • Two Pi Pico with CANBus. One connected to the SBC via USB and the other end connected to the stepper and stepper driver.
  • Run klipper on Pi Zero with host mcu and then use something like socat to connect to it remotely from the SBC running on the actually printer.

The later has the advantage of running over the existing network.

So any other ideas about how to do this?

Likely, the easiest approach is a CAN toolboard. You can connect this either via USB or via CAN to the klippy host on the SBC.
