Part cooling fan *rarely works

Basic Information:

Printer Model: Ender 3 Pro
MCU / Printerboard: atmega1284p
klippy.txt (3.3 MB)

klippy.log

Fill out above information and in all cases attach your klippy.log file. Pasting your printer.cfg is not needed

Describe your issue: Maybe 10% of the times I connect I actually have control of parts cooling fan, the rest of the time they are completely unresponsive.

Its an ender 3 with a hero me gen5 duct running 2 5015s off the standard pin, never didnt work with stock firmware. Recently switched to klipper and some prints they work fine so I dont think its a config issue.

m106 s255 goes through but nothing happens

from printer.cfg:
[fan]

pin: PB4

max_power: 0.8

shutdown_speed: 0

kick_start_time: 0.250

the annoying part is I dont realize the fans aren’t coming on until a few layers in and the only way that seems to bring them back is a firmware restart or unplugging/replugging in the usb cord.
Its probably something simple, any help is apreciated.

Hello @Starvin_Marlin !

You may set max_power to 1.

What material are you printing when this happens?

when the fans are running at 100% the hotend struggles to keep up so thats why its .8 max, but I’ll try it 1.0.
Ive had this happen with tpu and pla.

You may use a silicone sock to prevent this.

For the fan issue: have you checked the settings in the slicer?

Ya, slicer settings are normal and I have this issue in both prusa slicer and cura prints, not to mention just in the dashboard before I start a print I can control movement and temps fine just not the parts fan, and even then sometimes it is all working fine.

Im running this on a laptop with ubuntu 22.04 if that makes a difference ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Can you exclude some broken cables or solder joints?
Can you manually control those fans?

I wont 100% rule out a connection issue since I did have to splice the wires and the connector isnt glued into the board like they are from the factory but just this morning I sliced a print started it up and everything worked fine, then started another print without shutting off or changing anything and the fans are off and wont come on.
I’ve tried pinching/rolling/bending/wiggling the wires while its going to see if they even intermittently start and nothing

Well, this is embarasing. The pin fell out of the connector… I should put some hot glue on that. :unamused:

But good you found the culprit.
