Big gaps at z seam when using 0.8mm nozzle (underextrusion?)

Describe your issue:

Hello friends, I recently felt like trying out bigger nozzles, 0.8mm to be specific and I just cannot seem to fix my z seam which always ends up having a big gap, see pictures below.

People suggested elsewhere I should try to tune my pressure advance settings as well as extrusion multipliers, both of which did not fix the gap. I especially dont thing PA is my problem since all other corners print perfectly fine.

Attached is test_print.zip (renamed file extension from 3mf to zip), the file I’m trying to print because it highlights the gap pretty well

I do not have this issue on 0.4mm nozzles. They are the only other ones I’ve had on hand to test.

Have a great night everyone and thanks for reading this far <3

Hello @Nici !

Have you checked the seam settings in the slicer?
BTW: Is it the original Slic3r slicer or one of the forks?

I am using PrusaSlicer 2.6.0 with an aligned seam position because I find that it looks neater (when it works lol)

Have you adjusted the nozzle diameter in both printer.cfg as well as in the slicer?

I see, under [extruder] section, the nozzle_diameter = 0.4

That might be the problem. I’ll give it a shot when I get home from work.

Sidenote, the reason I havent tried changing this setting is because of this post implying that changing that setting would not make a difference.

Will keep you updated.

Alright, I’ve adjusted the setting in printer.cfg and it did not change anything. Settings were kept the same in PrusaSlicer because I had changed them accordingly before I even made this post. Attached are again the results, logs and relevant PrusaSlicer settings.

It seems it is an issue with the PrusaSlicer:

I’m going to try the same part in Cura with similar settings, gimme 20 minutes

Its somewhat better! I think using cura definitely contributed but it still seems like its not extruding far enough. One print had another hole in it but the second attempt was pretty alright. Compared to my 0.4mm prints the seam appears to bulge inwards a bit instead of outwards.

Ill crosspost this thread on the duet3d forum, looks like pretty much the same problem, thanks for the link

Nevermind as that thread appears to be multiple months old and necrobumping is generally not too appreciated

I wont mark this problem as solved just yet if thats alright.

Extrusion multiplier with 1,1?
Is this a bowden setup or direct feeder?

its a stock ender s1 using the stock direct drive extruder

Oh fuck yeah, I’m so happy, I managed to fix it!

The setting “Extra Length on Restart” completely closes the gap! Its a bit finicky on faster speeds (25mm/s +) but at about 20mm/s its pretty close to perfect! Props to that one person on reddit who suggested it.

What a pain this was to debug. Thank you all for the help. I seriously appreciate it <3

Enjoy the pics of my suffering and success.

4 mm retract on a direct feeder?
Then it is no wonder why you need to have such a high extra length on restart.
But nice if it works for you now.
