It sounds like a good case for adding bench testing and setup before installing a controller board to the documentation. Most boards, if tested at the manufacturer, will have some kind of firmware currently on the control board.

This sounds like another Darwin Award . IMO you cannot foresee everything and adding unneeded complexity all over the place for some edge cases makes no sense at all.
