Stepper 0.9 deg - very noise

Hi @hcet14 , the stepper is Usongshine 17HS4401 0.9° datasheet.

What should I enter in the cfg file of the printer to change the TSTEP parameter?

klipper - v0.11.0-159-gfec7ddd8

Thanks.

I warn you, this is very theoretical, since I’m already on Easter vacation and couldn’t try this!

[stepper_x]
microsteps = 256
SET_TMC_FIELD STEPPER=stepper_x FIELD=stealthchop_threshold VALUE=999999 VELOCITY=1048574

microsteps = 256 => STEP frequency increases
stealthchop_threshold VALUE=999999 => to always use “stealthChop” mode
VELOCITY=1048575 = (2^20)-1 => maximum value
use DUMP_TMC => TSTEP: 000ffffe tstep=1048574

As I said very theoretical… please correct me, if this is wrong!

Hi @hcet14

or

I tried TMC 2209 - UART and TMC 2130 - SPI.

The noise is exactly the same

again, try the Wantai 42BYGHM810 - its a game changer

Hi thanks,
but that’s not a solution, not everyone has and can’t have this stepper.

Petr

You are in the US? Is there no local store?

It’s not a local store, I’m from the Czech Republic

Maybe this store?

thanks, but from Germany it is for the same money as from Aliexpress

Can you elaborate in which specific way is this stepper a game changer?

If your comment primarily pertains to the acoustics, it is worth noting that acoustics alone is one of the least important stepper motor selection parameters for a 3D printer. Understanding of course that some stepper resonances can be strong enough to cause surface finish artifacts.

sorry for the late response:

  • very low inductance
  • very low resistance
  • very high current rating ( 2,4A !! ) for 0,9 stepper
  • very silent
  • overall experience with this stepper motor for the last 3 month’s

Quite expensive those motors.
What stepper drivers are you using? Tested a couple of motors and currently have louder ones installed…

im using external tmc5160 stepper drivers with 48V, but 24V should be fine too:

here are the stepper drivers im using a.t.m.:

and here is my design for a case:

/edit: and as said, i did also thousands of tests, this was the only one that changes everything :slight_smile:

Hi, thanks for the discussion.
I still can’t get rid of the feeling that there is something wrong with the engine control by the driver (timing with the Klipper).

When I use a stepper of 1.8 degrees from any manufacturer with TMC2209, it is quiet without resonances.

So why the hell is there such a difference in steppers of 0.9 degrees?
I can’t understand that.

Well, I’m using LDO and Moons 0.9° stepper on TMC2209. I cannot say that they are noisy but this also might be a subjective impression.

Thanks very much, and no worries.

All relative I guess. My Moons’ were several times the price of the Wantai, and Moons’ themselves are a tiny fraction of what many of the industrial steppers cost…

just made a foto of my stepper motor collection which i have already tested ( to get an idea what im talking about ):

could be around 300 Euros of now unused stepper motors :neutral_face: All of these have no chance against Wantai 42BYGHM810

Even the mentioned ( pricy ) moons MS17HD2P4150 ( right bottom stepper motor ) have no chance and are a joke compared against the Wantai 42BYGHM810

Well, undoubtedly a nice assortment. I wonder about your test method to come to the above stated conclusion. Can you elaborate?

Hi everyone.
I will probably end this discussion, because choosing one 0.9 stepper from many variants so that it is not noisy seems to me a bad solution.
I stay with stepper 1.8 where these problems are not.
