How To Create An Ultrawide Fov Webcam!

Hello,

*Be aware that this could make you hate your webcam’s fov.

I added an old Microsoft Lifecam vx-5000 to my printer that I found at my grandparents house (I asked if I could have it). But the real kicker here is the fact that I bought some fisheye lenses meant for mobile phones, and then glued them to it. The fov on this thing is insane! In case anyone else wants to do it, it adds a lot of functionality to your printer as you can mount the cam super close and still get the whole bed in view. For context, my cam is mounted less than a foot away from my print head, and it still gets the whole bed in view! Such a fun mod, and useful too. Obviously, the lifecam has a 55 degree fov, however, adding a 180 fisheye lens makes it amazing!

This whole setup would cost you about 35 bucks, give or take. You will have to get the cam used, however, its unique design makes it so you can add these lenses without adding any vignette. If anyone likes, I can go in depth on how to do this. Also the lenses don’t require any refocusing, which is nice.

Ps: I am sure that you could stick one of these on your already existing webcam, however, it just might not work out as cleanly as mine did.

I have 3 LifeCam6000’s luv em… thier only 720p but have virtual pan, tilt, zoom if you don’t use full resolution in crowsnest.
I also git posted a set of macros that add bash shell comands to control the cams.

Hello,

Those are nice! I might eventually upgrade to something like that in the future. I like the fact that it rotates. . .

no, it doesnt rotate. It’s more of a software (virtual) pan-tilt while zoomed… just a feature that shows up in the v4l2-ctls command, when I dont use the full resolution of the camera in crowsnest.

its a tiny little usb camera that was intended to clip on top of your laptop…
