vzbot 330 custom build
robin nano v3
btt cb1 host
serial connection
klipper/fluidd
printer was working fine, then stopped connecting, i checked some connections, made sure nothing was loose, checked power supply, etc etc, after 2 days, it started working again and connecting, so started a print job, went just fine, the printer is currently printing, host seems to be fine but every 1 or 2 minutes (sometimes seconds) i keep getting the ‘‘connecting to moonraker’’ message and cant control anything, it stays disconnected for seconds up to minutes, connects again, seems to work just fine and then it all starts back again
in no moment the printer stopped printing, so i thing the host is fine, just the web page/fluidd interface that keeps doing that
edit: around 7 minutes ago it disconnected again and so far did not manage to connect again, printer still printing, but fluidd interface is stuck on the ‘‘connecting to moonraker’’ screen.
this is the longest it has been disconnected for
update: the connects and disconnects seem to be even more random, since my post i counted 6 of them, some seconds apart and other over 10+ minutes apart
update 2: i saw that a lot of updates were available (fluidd, klipper, moonraker), did all of them, thought they disconnections stopped, but around 30 minutes after updating they started again
i did, forgot to mention:
i tried putting the bbt cb1 as static ip, no changes.
also, if it’s currently ‘‘disconnected’’ besides not being able to connect to it on the fluidd interface, i also cant access it via putty, terminal window shows up but nothing loads.
i did however find it odd that even on it’s disconnected state, the device and ip adress still shows on my router’s active devices list, it never appears to vanish, only if i turn it off.
also, around 1 hours ago i turned the printer and host off, and turned it back on, after this, the printer took around 10 minutes to connect, connected, for like, 15 seconds, and then disconnected again, so far, did not regain connection (been around 40 minutes)
ok, another update, i tried reserving an ip adress again, but now i typed the specific ip i wanted, turned everything off and on and now, i managed to connect to it again, not sure it ill stay connected, but ill update if it disconnects again
edit 1: nope, still disconnecting, however with shorter intervals so far, is coming and going every 10 seconds or so, sometimes a little more
edit 2: ill try to use a different host, even tho this btt cb1 is pretty new, i have a couple more boxed up, ill grab one, switch sds and try that, to see if it might be something related to the host itself or to the wifi antenna (hardware)
edit 3: changed the host, booted up fine, so far, connected with no issues
me neither, but now i got a different, out of the box cb1 connected, will see what happens just in case, if the issues persists, ill just change back and keep troubleshooting
found something weird here, as i said, i changed the board to another cb1, it has been on, without disconnections for almost 2 hours so far.
while checking some other things, decided to take a closer look at the old board, check the wifi antenna, etc etc.
that’s when i noticed something that i’m not very sure if it might be related, but i’m sure i shouldn’t happen.
(obs: the board was always stored in one of those printed cases, has never been dropped and i’m pretty sure this damage bellow did not happen when i was taking it off it’s case)
Not sure if it’s clear on the pictures, but on the sd card slot, the front 2 ‘‘tiny feet’’ that fixes the front of the metal part to the board’s frame broke on the solder point and now the other metal case of the sd card slot is kinda loose.
i’ll take another sd from another cb1 that i have to see if the board still boots up if i apply a little pressure on the slot to make sure it’s making contact with the connections
also, not sure if this issue might the related to the disconnections, since the board never stopped ‘‘working/printing’’ i was just unable to access it via ip
I see the lifted side of the SD Card connector but it’s difficult - any chance that you can retake the pictures and post them at higher resolution?
Regardless, if the connector’s solder connections are coming loose you’re best bet is to use another host SBC. It will be difficult to solder the pads back on (even with the correct equipment) and there’s a good chance that you’ll further damage the connector.
video bellow, shows a couple more things regarding the problematic host 20250604_113424(2).zip (7.8 MB)
i turned it on with a different sd and kept some pressure on the slot to make sure the sd had good contact with the connections, left it on for around 20 minutes and did not get a disconnection in the period.
bellow, some pics showing the damage on the metal bit of the slot:
I can’t tell if it’s the solder joint or the metal of the connector that’s failed but, either way, I think you are best to junk the CB1 and replace it.
yeah, think it was this as well, the printer with the other cb1 hasn’t disconnected since.
since i have other boards laying around i wont use the damaged one for any of my machines to avoid failed prints, but since the board is pretty new, in perfect’ish condition and still works fine, besides the sd slot thing, ill try to ‘‘fix it’’ at least enough so it’s usefull for some other project.
anyhow, thanks for the help, ill keep the post open for a little more just in case i get another disconnect with the new board, but once i’m sure that was the issue, ill mark as solved.
since there wasn’t much be lost, decided to try my best to solder the little metal bit back to the board, with my poor soldering skills, i managed to do this:
far from perfect, but at least the board turns on and so far (5 mins) hasn’t disconnected even with me not using any weights on it, ill see how it holds up
not where i live, here (brazil), raspberries are pretty pricey
a basic cm4 for example goes for around the equivalent of 120/140$ (that’s like 10% of the minimum wage here lol) and that’s if you even find one for sale.
a cb1 on the other hand is the equivalent of 30/40$ on aliexpress
and since i have multiple printers using external hosts, but some extra cb1s a while back
still got 1 extra, so i should be good…for another month before another one of my machines decides to act up XD
anyhow, the issues seems to be gone now, 5+ hours with no disconnections, ill mark the post as solved, tks again for the help
Almost 30$ and free shipping, what a dream lol.
I’d love to have raspberries at work here, but the price of them in my country dont help much, pi 3s and 4s are the most overpriced, sometimes costing 3 to 6 times as much as they do outside.
brazil has some of the worst importing laws and taxes in the globe, however i do plan on going to the US at the end of this year, might grab some on the way back if i do, tks anyways tho.
and btw, no disconnections anymore, left the printer with a 14h job overnight, still going strong, yey.
